Welcome to Poke’s dev blog

February 16th, 2011

The purpose of this site is to talk about some of the technical activity that goes on behind the scenes at Poke, and behind the sites that we build.

We have a lot of fun, and face many challenges in building sites at Poke. These typically go beyond ‘build another CMS’, into bizarre realms like ‘build an application that allows people to re-record popular songs with their friends from social networks, using their computers and their mobile phones’, or ‘build a balloon-race across the Internet’, or ‘build another CMS but in a fortnight, with support for 21 languages and able to handle 10 million visitors in 24 hours’.

In the process of meeting these challenges, we get to string together both old and very new technologies, typically open source, using our own tech-glue and ingenuity. Sometimes we get to make up entirely new stuff.

So, rather than just sitting down in the pub and discussing these things ourselves, we decided we’d like to share them with you as well. Actually we’ve been meaning to do this for ages, but tend to be a bit on the busy side. This time!

If this tech-focused content isn’t up your alley, we have lots of info about Poke projects sat on http://www.pokelondon.com/.
